Progress report of Donations and Contribution received by the Consulate General of Republic of Indonesia in New York in helping the victims of tsunami and earthquakes in the Provinces of Aceh, Nias of North Sumatra, Yogyakarta and Central Java

    Through mechanism of “the Social Fund” set up by the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, all donations and contributions received by the Indonesian embassies and consulates all over the world, including that of Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, have been managed to fund various reconstruction projects in the areas affected by the earth quake disasters that struck Aceh and Nias as well as Yogyakarta and Central Java.  Recovery phase is now still underway through the reconstruction initiatives which focus on the welfare of the children, rebuilding the educational institutions, as well as housing and sanitation projects, providing students’ scholarship program, in all of the affected areas.  

 

        As for the victims of tsunami and earthquake in Aceh and Nias in December 2004, the completed projects funded by “the Social Fund” are among others the construction of an orphanage children centre, rebuilding of homes and water sanitations,  schools, mosques, providing financial assistance or scholarship programs for some Acehnese graduate/postgraduate students studying in various universities in Indonesia and abroad, reconstruction of the library of Faculty of Law, Syiah Kuala University as well as laboratory of elementary and middle high schools in various regions and cities throughout the Aceh Province.


Some projects are still ongoing or pending due to the limitation of funding such as the reconstruction of schools in Aceh and Nias as well as polytechnic building in Blang Bintang region (Aceh), the construction of more permanent shelter and orphanage for the victim of armed conflict and tsunami in Banda Aceh and the rebuilding of 240 homes in six regions in Aceh.


 While in helping the victims of the recent earth quake in Yogyakarta and Central Java, such donations and contributions received by “the Fund” have been spent to provide clothing and mineral water and other basic needs for the victims of earthquake that occurred in May 28, 2006.  They are also utilized to provide the financial assistance for the reconstruction of schools in Bantul region, Yogyakarta and in Klaten region, Central Java Province.  These projects spent a total of more than US$ 325,000.00


     Of  the total donations and contribution have so far been received by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York since January 2005 have amounted to US$  101.026.38 for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Aceh and Nias and US$ 20,554.65 for the earthquake victims in Yogyakarta and Central Java Provinces respectively.


 In this respect, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia would like to thank for the overwhelming generosity shown by various community based organizations as well as individuals in New York City and the surrounding areas for helping the victims of the tsunami and earthquakes in the respective Provinces of Aceh, Nias of North Sumatra, Yogyakarta and Central Java.
