The DARMASISWA program was first started in 1974, when only students from countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) were allowed entry into the program. However, by 1976, other students from countries such as Hungary, Norway, Mexico, Sweden, Canada, France, Australia and the USA were also allowed to participate.

The main purpose of the DARMASISWA program is to foster and encourage interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among friendly countries. It was also designed to reciprocate scholarship programs by other countries for Indonesian citizens and strengthen cultural links with these nations.

The DARMASISWA program is essentially a “non-degree” program undertaken within one year. Its participants are prohibited from engaging in any political or business activities which may result in destabilizing government programs or lead to personal profit.

During the course of the program, participants are strongly advised against making any changes in their place of study.
